Dance Church offers a safe, judgment-free space for anyone who loves to dance and enjoys free expression. You are welcome to move in any way that feels right to you, including walking around the room or being in stillness.

The 90-minute playlist is inspired by the 5 Rhythms, following a "Wave" that starts out slowly, builds to a crescendo, then returns to quiet.

The 5 Rhythms Inspired Dance Practice

The 5 Rhythms movement practice  framework was developed by Gabrielle Roth who discovered that humans naturally respond and move in specific ways to 5 different musical rhythms. She discovered this during her work with elderly people while facilitating movement exercises.

Dancing through these rhythms opens a journey for processing life's challenges that can get stuck in your energy field: i.e. , the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual body. It is a simple and holistic approach to clear your field of consciousness.

Guidelines for a safe and enjoyable dance environment:

•  Refrain from conversation or cell phone use on the dance floor, so dancers can stay connected with their body and feelings

•  Be aware of and respect others' personal space - if you want to dance with another person, approach as an invitation, and don't take it personally if they decline

•  This is a judgment-free space, where all kinds of people and movement (as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone else) is welcome

• This is a space for conscious dance - please refrain from any intoxicants

• Closing circle at the end of the dance - we come together for a brief closing circle in which participants are welcome to share about their experience. Announcements about upcoming events are also welcome.

Dance Church Facilitators

Timothy and Emily have enjoyed participating in active dance communities in Olympia, WA and Portland, OR, and missed that experience after moving to the SLV. In 2024, they decided to fill the void and created Dance Church in Monte Vista, with help from Madeleine Alhborn, founder of The Church Project.

I discovered the 5 Rhythms in 2000, while living and working at the Esalen retreat center in Big Sur. I've been a devoted dancer ever since. Dance is my greatest joy, and my one-stop-shopping for physical exercise, emotional release, creative expression, and community connection.

My playlists include a range of genres - hip-hop, 80s, funk, soul, electronica, house, pop... - and are guided by which tracks make me want to dance, and are likely to inspire others to move and be moved.

For my day job, I've been a professional astrologer, and creative writing workshop facilitator, for more than 25 years. I teach classes & retreats mostly online and sometimes in person, give individual readings, and share new and full moon transmissions on Substack.

It was around 2005 in Olympia, WA that I discovered the 5 Rhythms dance. There was a solid group of people involved that inspired and impressed upon me, which led to a deepened experience of self-awareness through movement and dance.

As a seeker of self-realization and higher states of consciousness, this form of dance became a great practice. It is also a fantastic opportunity to be in community with like minded, loving individuals, as well as a fun way to stay in shape.

I am an instructor and practitioner of Aikido, a refined Japanese martial art known as The Way of Universal Harmony. It is all about harmonizing with life energy. I have found that Aikido and the 5 Rhythms partner well as way to navigate through everyday life challenges with grace.
