Wave - a Sequence of 5 Rhythms

The 5 Rhythms is a dynamic moving meditation and expressive dance practice created by Gabrielle Roth. Danced in a sequence called a "Wave," the practice is a map meant to embody different states of being and release the mind through physical movement.

Flowing

The rhythm of the body, fluidity, and feminine energy.

Focus: Grounding, finding your center, and connecting to your own natural movement and inner truth. You learn to follow your own physical instincts rather than controlling them.

Staccato

The rhythm of the heart, fire, and masculine energy.

Focus: Sharp, percussive, and angular movements. It is about setting boundaries, expressing your feelings, and communicating clearly.

Chaos

The rhythm of the mind and water.

Focus: Surrendering control, letting go of judgments, and releasing your body into unpredictable movement. It acts as a bridge to clear mental clutter and welcome the unknown.

Lyrical

The rhythm of the soul and air.

Focus: Surrendering control, letting go of judgments, and releasing your body into unpredictable movement. It acts as a bridge to clear mental clutter and welcome the unknown.

Stillness

The rhythm of the spirit and ether.

Focus: Integration and inner peace. The body slows down to a meditative state, bringing awareness to the present moment where all contraries dissolve into oneness.

5 Rhythms - gateways to experience & expression

Within the practice of 5 Rhythms, each rhythm is a gateway to emotional experience and an opportunity for expression, release and integration.

Expression

– where one gives movement to any energy stored or present within the body. Expression is a form of connection with one's inner experience, which will vary throughout the dance. Expression is a spectrum, it can include fluidity, forceful movement and/or stillness.

Release

– feeling an emotion, and moving through it organically, without pushing, to the point where it is no longer contained within the body

Integration

– settling into the spaciousness of the body after release. Where one gains awareness and insight of the subtle differences present in the energetic body, with the opportunity to embody this new version of themselves, the space of rebirth.
